The Role of a Member

Why become a Member?

No previous experience in education is required. Effective membership bodies benefit from people with a wide range of backgrounds and expertise.

Being a Member provides an opportunity to:

  • Make a meaningful contribution to the lives of children and young people and support the long-term success and sustainability of the trust.
  • Bring a professional and independent perspective to an important role.
  • Help ensure strong governance and accountability.
  • Work alongside experienced leaders and like-minded individuals committed to education and social impact.

What do Members do?

Members are sometimes described as the guardians of the trust's governance. Their role is distinct from the work of trustees and executive leaders and is similar to that of a shareholder in a company but for charitable purpose not financial gain.

Collectively, Members:

  • Uphold the trust's charitable objects and values.
  • Appoint and remove trustees.
  • Ensure that effective governance arrangements are in place and hold the board of trustees to account for the effective governance of the trust.
  • Receive annual reports and accounts and provide an additional layer of accountability.
  • Act in the long-term interests of the trust and the communities it serves.

Members are expected to maintain an appropriate degree of independence and provide assurance that the trust continues to fulfil its mission and public benefit responsibilities.

What is the commitment?

The role is voluntary and typically involves attendance at an Annual General Meeting and 3 additional online meetings or conversations during the year. Members are also expected to maintain an understanding of the trust and its governance arrangements and keep abreast of educational news and updates.
